The Center for Economic and Social Justice (CESJ) is an ecumenical, non-partisan, non-profit, educational research organization dedicated to a free enterprise approach to economic justice through expanded ownership opportunities.

In its educational role, CESJ focuses on the employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) and related expanded capital ownership technologies as practical means for implementing and developing essential principles of economic and social justice. CESJ's research is dedicated to economic empowerment of working people and citizens generally, focusing on democratization of access to capital credit.

CESJ is seeking two candidates for its internship program. This challenging internship will teach participants a new approach to social change and can offer valuable experiences for candidates interested in pursuing a career as an ESOP professional. The preferable intern candidate would be a law, business administration, marketing, sociology, economics, or political science student. An interest in banking and finance is also a plus. Such a candidate should have a keen awareness of the impact of technological advances on the demand for labor.

Examples of Projects Involving 70% of Intern's Time.

  • Researching and evaluating CESJ's proposed Capital Homestead Act as a new thrust for economic and social policy. Developing a strategy for marketing this idea to policy-makers, business leaders, bankers, economists, academia, the media, and grassroots networks.

  • Assisting in research on the history and policies of the Federal Reserve System (particularly its use of the discount mechanism as a key component of CESJ's monetary proposals for democratizing access to productive credit).

  • Enhancing CESJ's outreach to the media, arranging forums for CESJ speakers, and setting up university-based CESJs.

  • Assisting and producing a CESJ community access TV series. Writing scripts and conducting interviews with scholars, practitioners, ESOP company CEOs and employee-owners.

  • Developing a CESJ presence on the Internet to disseminate CESJ's concepts, publicize its literature and attract new members.

Other Work Involving 30% of Intern's Time.

  • Administration and development of CESJ's membership program.

  • Assisting in the publication of CESJ's newsletter.

  • Improving CESJ's volunteer and internship recruitment programs.

  • Organizing CESJ library.

Skills the Internship Candidate Should Possess:

  • Strong research and writing skills (law review experience would be ideal).

  • Public relations skills (organizing press conferences, interviews for CESJ spokespersons).

  • Leadership skills (the ability to attract and organize other students).

Assignments may include writing summaries, briefs, reports, press releases, and articles. In addition, certain assigned tasks will involve compiling, systematizing and cataloguing information. The candidate will also be responsible for interacting with the public and responding to requests for information about CESJ.

Familiarity with Macintosh and/or Windows 95/98, is extremely helpful. Interns will be using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point, as well as Mac-based address list and page layout programs (Pagemaker).

Time Period for which Intern is Needed.

    September through December
